Success By 6 has developed a highly visible award to recognize businesses for having family-friendly policies and family-oriented benefits. Since Success By 6 is concerned about the development of the child from prenatal to age 6 and the child's readiness to start school and be successful, the Spirit of the Family Award is designed to put emphasis on the family in the workplace.

2003 was our third year recognizing family-friendly employers. In 2001, we had 27 nominees and several businesses were recognized with Spirit of the Family Awards at an award luncheon held at the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club. Our top performers that year were Cargill Fertilizer, Bank of America, Resolution Performance products, Lakeland AutoMall, and Surgical Center of Central Florida. In April 2002 we had 42 nominees and held an award event at the Lakeland Center. Our top performers in 2002 were St. Paul Lutheran Church & School, First Union Corporation, State Farm Insurance, McCollum & Rinaldo, LLC, Alan Jay Automotive Network, and Florida Hospital Heartland Division. In 2003, we recognized our top performers by holding an award event at the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club. Awards were be given in the categories of small, medium, and large businesses.

The intent of the Spirit of the Family Award is to enhance and develop more family -friendly policies within our business area and thereby improve family life for our children. The Spirit of the Family Awards showcase companies that help their employees reduce the conflicts between their jobs and family responsibilities. Success By 6 will honor companies that develop and maintain work/family benefits that are extremely valuable to their employees. Spirit of the Family Workplaces will be desirable places to seek employment and work.
